Glaucoma is a blinding disease that affects an unknown number of our population. The unfortunate aspect of glaucoma is that there are no symptoms. There are signs that a doctor can see during a general eye examination which can then lead to the proper diagnosis and preventative treatment. Photizo Eye Clinic has extensive experience treating glaucoma and trains yearly in the newest techniques and treatments for this devastating disease.
If you are diagnosed with glaucoma you will probably be placed on some form of eye drop to reduce the pressure within your eyes. It is important to keep your appointed follow-ups with your eye doctor so that the effects (and side effects) of your medication can be monitored. Sometimes a medication you have used for years will simply stop working when the body develops resistance to it. It is then important that your eye doctor evaluates which medicine will be best to prescribe for you in its place.
Cataracts are not a disease. Many people think that cataracts are something we “catch”. Behind the colored part of the eye (the iris) is a lens. This lens is what focuses light on the retina (in the back of the eye). When that lens becomes cloudy (somewhat like a dirty window) it becomes difficult to see through it and this is a cataract. This clouding can be related to aging changes, use of certain medications, and cumulative exposure to ultraviolet light.
